The 2008 Millville Tournament

Florence vs Kingsway Lady Flashes lose heart breaker 1-0 on a seventh inning two out single

With their first two regular season games raind out and not having face any real good pitching in their scrimmages, the "Beautiful Battlin' Bat Babes" finally faced some real competition. Although they didn't get the hits they need to produce a win still the "Babes gave a good accout of themselves as both games were not decided until the seventh inning. Although they returned five starters from last year, the Babes only have two players back at their regular positions. Last years shortstop "Sweets" Sweeney is now at third base, "Oh-Kay" Garganio (firstbase last year) is in the circle, and "Money" Million (rightfield last year) has moved to centerfield. The Lady flashes infield is totally revamped with freshman "Desi" Fillmyre at shortstop, "Jackie-Gee" Giambrone (up from junior varsity) at second and "Sugar" Maple (last years utilityplayer) holding the bag at first. Also new to the team is freshman right fielder "Killah" Kilian. The two returnees at their regular spots are catcher "Chee-Chee" Kher and leftfielder "Smooth" Schreck.

In the first game, the Flashes Gals were holding ther own against Kingsways (State Group 3 semi finals last year) senior picther Minix and entered the bottom of the seventh inning in a scoreless tie, and loss the game 1-0 on a two out game ending single. The second game was almost a repeat with the Bat Babes facing a good group 4 Millville squad. The Babes were nursing a 2-1 lead earnd (mainly) on the hitting of all state catcher "Chee-chee" Kher and some nifty base running by freshman utility player Diamon "Dust" West going into the top of the seventh inning. Unfortunately the Lady Thunderbolts were able to push accross three runs in their half of the inning to pull out a come from behind win.

Florence vs Millville Bat Babes drop consolation game 4-2 as Lady Thunderbolts score 3 runs in the seventh inning

Despite the two losses, the Bat Babes still look like the team to beat in the freedom Division and should make the playoffs to defend their state title. Perninnial rival New Egypt will (as usual) present the biggest opposition to the Lady Flashes repeating as devision champs and with Abbey Huston in the circle they will really have to have their defense in top form as Abbey is one of the top (if not the top) pitchers the Babes will face this season. all in all though the Lady flashes have the material to get the job done. It's just a matter of time before the hitting comes around and Kelly "Oh-Kay" Garganio's pitching is certainly good enough to compete with best of the division. Freshman Menissa "Go Gurl" Blackwell  (who plays travel ball for the Bordentow Bandits) is slated to be available soon and should provide some extra hitting and defense in the infield. Freshman Brittnay "Tee-Nee" Logan (also  a Bandit) will provide help in the outfield. The Flashes Gals are now looking forward to getting in a game on their new home field and getting their first win of the season in front of their home fans.
